Coconut husk is often overlooked and considered worthless waste that only accumulates and pollutes the environment. However, a study by I Wayan Nampa, Siska Elvani, and I Nyoman Sirma (2023) challenges that notion. Through community engagement with farmers in Kupang Regency, they demonstrated that coconut husk can be processed into cocopeat and cocofiber—two high-value products now in demand both domestically and for export.
🛠️ Turning Waste into Valuable Products
The study was conducted in two villages: Oben and Manusak, areas rich in coconut production but lacking proper husk waste management. Through hands-on training, the researchers introduced simple technologies to:
Separate fibers (cocofiber) and fine powder (cocopeat) from coconut husks
Transform cocofiber into plant pots, mats, and handicrafts
Use cocopeat as an organic growing medium as a soil alternative
As a result, local farmers are now able to turn daily waste into economically valuable products, while also expanding their household income streams.

More than just technical training, the study raised awareness in the community about the potential of husk waste as a green export commodity, especially for the organic horticulture market and natural furniture industry.
